Three Kids, Two Mommies and One Dad!
Amber has really been on my case lately to get things updated on Tristan's blog, so I am going to start with the great Trek to Michigan. Amber and I really wanted to get back to Michigan to see her family and this time we decided to take along Nicole and her two boys, Kael and Damek.
This would be the first time that Nicole and her boys had ever been on an airplane so it was going to be a first on many levels.
The day started VERY early on Wednesday, 5:00 in the morning to be exact. Nicole and the boys spent the night at our house and my mother came over early to drive us all to the airport. The morning trip to the airport went off without a hitch and everyone was very well behaved. At the airport we checked in and participated in the standard security measures in order to fly. Southwest was nice enough to let us pre-board and all sit together. On the way up to MI, I sat with Nicole and the boys to help out. After the plane was airborne and the initial newness of the process wore off the kids knocked out for most of the flight to Chicago, our first stop on the way to Detroit.
We had to change planes in Chicago and for Amber and I we were back in one of our favorite cities, but just in the airport. The Chicago airport is HUGE and full of the "people movers" which Kael found very interesting. I think he and I walked 5 miles before our next flight. it was even fun to walk against the walkway and see the confusion in Kael's face.
Once we landed in Detroit we packed up, or rather jammed all our crap into Aunt Carol's SUV and headed to Mt. Pleasant. After a nice three hour drive to Aunt Carol's house we unloaded and occupied our respective rooms for our week long stay. The first night we just hung out at the house and rested from the journey. The kids really enjoyed the air hockey and pool table and numerous dips in the hot tub. The weather was great while we were there and a light jacket was needed . . .EVEN IN JUNE!!!!
The MI trip served many purposes, but one reason that we headed up there was to celebrate with cousin Kate and cousin Josh on thier graduation from High School. This celebration was held at the VA hall and included a roasted pig complements of her older brother, Dan. It was also an opportunity to see Amber's Grandmother and Grampa Karl on her Dad's side and all the various cousins, aunts, uncles and family friends.
After all the scholarly celebrating, Aunt Carol, Cousin Amy and all of us drove up to Mackinac Island. Carol and Amy stayed with us for the day and then returned home that night, while we all stayed the night in Mackinac City. Mackinac is this super cool place where there are no motorized vehicles allowed so you have to walk, bike or ride a horse. It is also a place imbedded in the history of Michigan. You have to take a ferry from the mainland over to the Island. It's always a fun trip over and we all sat on the top deck of the ferry. We spent most of the day riding around the Island, laying and playing on the lawn, people watching, eating fudge and buying t-shirts and souvenirs. Later that night after we checked into the hotel, Amber and I took Damek out to see the laser light show. Unfortunately the laser show was canceled so we just walked around and window shopped. This is the second time that I have been to Mackinac and I have yet to see this "laser light show" that Amber raves about. After the sun went down we took pictures of the bridge and Amber reminisced about her family coming up to the island on vacation.
The next morning we walked around Mackinac city, ate breakfast and bought more stuff. We took a drive over the Mackinac Bridge to visit the Mystery Spot and the Needle Rock.
We returned to Mt. Pleasant that evening and got to bed early after our trip. The rest of the trip we hung out in town and went on walks in the parks and visited the local college, Central Michigan. The campus remained me a lot of SFA, where I went to school. Lots of huge trees and green grass.
The next Wednesday we packed up the car again and headed back to Detroit for our trip home. The plane trip back was a little more subdued since the newness had worn off. My mother picked us up at the airport and we finally made it back to our own homes and were ready for another vacation . . .from the vacation.
It was a GREAT trip!
